Last month I traveled to Newberry, SC to speak to a group of city & county leaders on the topic of creating catalysts for change. It was a great opportunity to share how these talented individuals and sub-groups could come together to ignite growth strategies and merge ideas to positively impact their small, yet powerful city. When the event was over, I wondered if God was calling me to help small cities across the U.S. explore how they could improve their ability to work together to embrace change and improve the economic foundation. On the way back home to Greensboro,NC my GPS took me off the highway and after a moment of panic I decided to take the road less traveled. NC 16….East 57…..I knew I could get back on the main highway, but why? I leaned in and trusted the path.
When my kids are in the car with me, I usually have the station on K-Love or Top 40. Not this time. Momma’s in charge – so it was country – all the way. I was thrilled when this song came on the radio and as I traveled the back roads of South Carolina I got goose bumps when I heard these words, “Trust your rebel heart ride it into battle, don’t be afraid to take the road less traveled.”
This resonated with me for several reasons.
- I followed my heart and separated from my husband of 20 years because I needed to be my best and so did he, and I believed we could not do that as a married couple.
- I completed my book, My Year on the Inside, after months of feeling insecure and lack of confidence.
- I took on a newsletter project to create residual income that my business portfolio needed desperately.
- I created two new business partnerships to take my company to the next level.
- I continue to grow and learn how to be a better parent by asking for advice, making mistakes and never giving up.
That’s my top 5. Warren Buffet has taught me that you can’t have too many goals at one time. It dilutes your efforts. So, for now, here’s my top three.
- Be the best mom I can be to my kids.
- Spend time praying for guidance and wisdom.
- Focus on business activity in my professional strengths by investing time with people that want to learn how to improve relationships to grow their businesses.
What will I let go of for the holiday season? I will let go of the sadness that has come with separation. I will embrace the changes in family activities and continue to take the road less traveled. Will you join me?
