Ten years ago, our family took on Sugar Mountain for a ski and snowboard getaway. My preferred method of getting down the slopes since I was in elementary school was on skis. On this trip, I decided to try out snowboarding and promptly signed up for a group lesson to make sure I had the basics and knew proper technique. Whether I could achieve that or not would be a different story. A few hours later, I was feeling pretty confident and post lunch took to the slopes with renewed enthusiasm.

What I didn’t expect was to hear my friend say, “Wow, Merikay – you are looking really good!”

After those words I gave her a huge smile and then remember hitting the ice really hard with the back of my head (yes, I had a bright Pepto pink helmet on). There’s not much snow in NC, it’s virtually all ice. It was about 3:30pm so I decided to call it a day. I took my gear off and was at the base of the mountain recalling my tragic fall when all of a sudden an uncontrolled novice skier plowed into the back of me. I went face first into the ice/snow and my gear went everywhere. I popped back up and shook my head, and thought, “DAMN – that hurt!”

Fast forward a few days and shooting pain was coming from the back of my lower neck. Orthopedic, Chiropractic, Physical Therapy & Acupuncture visits filled the next few months from slipped discs and I finally called my cousin who was a chiropractor in West Virginia and said, “I am miserable, you have got to help me.”

That’s when my journey with Young Living Oils began. My cousin Beth did a few adjustments after applying Rutalava, Stress Away and Deep Relief. I still use these oils today when I have flare ups from too much stress, long sessions at the computer or workouts that were meant for 20 year olds.

This is my introduction to my blog followers about essential oils and I hope that you enjoy this abbreviated version of Dr. Wiggy’s article. For those of you on Instagram, please check out my new page #merikayessentiallife. These oils and the Young Living lifestyle are positively impacting my health, life & work. I hope they help make a difference for you or someone you care about for 2019. Blessings!

Essential oils are a very hot and very controversial topic in 2018. They’re a hot topic because it seems like everywhere you turn, someone is advertising essential oils…or friends, family and even some physicians (like myself) promote their use. But they’re also quite controversial.

Essential oils are controversial for a few reasons. The first reason is one I’m quite happy about. The rise in the use of essential oils threatens the pharmaceutical industry as they wrestle away the monopolistic control that industry has on “healing.” That doesn’t mean I’m happy pharmaceutical companies are losing money. I’m just happy people are turning to different forms of treatments and are no longer content to be forced to believe that drugs are all there is available for improving health.

That being said, I’m happy to report essential oils certainly can help heal the human body. And the scientific community is collecting mounds of evidence proving they’re far more useful than ever before.
I’d like to spend my time focusing on what I consider to be 5 of the most essential essential oils for healing. These healing claims are backed by research and I’m positive we’ll see more studies support the use of these oils for better health.

5 Of The Top Essential Oils For Healing Revealed

1 – Frankincense:
It helps fight dangerous inflammation: Several studies have shown frankincense reduces markers in the body that lead to inflammation. This suggests conditions caused by inflammation might be prevented through the application or ingestion of this amazing oil.
It may boost immune function: Another way frankincense may help keep you healthy is by giving your immune system a shot in the arm. Boswellic acid, the primary healing compound in frankincense, has been shown to modulate your immune system’s response so it can fight off all kinds of unhealthy threats to your body.

2 – Clove:
More than just a fun spice to add to wintertime treats, clove is actually a potent essential oil with some serious health boosting properties. Clove is a powerful antimicrobial which means when used as a cleaning agent…or even when ingested…it has the power to do some serious damage to dangerous bacteria.
Clove is also one of the most potent antioxidants known to man. With an ORAC of 1,078,700 (a measurement system for antioxidant strength), clove is considered to be a contender for antioxidant of the year. It is 30x more potent than blueberries. This also means it’s a great anti-inflammatory and can help regulate the body’s inflammatory response, keeping you healthy in the process.

3 – Lavender:
Most people are quite familiar with lavender. It smells great and makes its way into many cosmetics and food products. Turns out it’s great for keeping you healthy, too.
As biblical scholar and health researcher Dr. Eric Zielinski notes, “Well-known for its soothing, calming properties, lavender is wonderful for accelerating healing time for burns, cuts, stings, and other wounds. It is jam-packed with antioxidant power, which is why researchers from Tunisia evaluated its ability to treat diabetes and oxidative stress in rats.”
Published in the journal Lipids in Health and Disease, the article tells us that lavender essential oils “significantly protected against the increase of blood glucose as well as the decrease of antioxidant enzyme activities.” Ultimately, scientists discovered that lavender essential oil treatment helped induce a decrease in oxidative stress, which is known to cause heart disease and a slew of other health concerns, as well as increase antioxidant enzyme activities.

4 – Oregano:
I’ve written about oregano, both the plant and the oil, once before but considering what it can do, I have to hit on it again.
Oregano might be one of the most powerful essential oils on the planet. That’s because it possesses two compounds with near drug-like properties. These compounds are carvacrol and thymol which are both extremely powerful antibacterials and antifungals.
It’s so powerful that it’s widely used in the treatment and abatement of more medical conditions than almost any other essential oil sold.
The oil of oregano is taken by mouth for intestinal parasites, allergies, sinus pain, arthritis, cold and flu, swine flu, earaches, and fatigue. It is applied to the skin for skin conditions including acne, athlete’s foot, oily skin, dandruff, canker sores, warts, ringworm, rosacea, and psoriasis; as well as for insect and spider bites, gum disease, toothaches, muscle pain, and varicose veins. Oregano oil is also used topically as an insect repellent. “

5 – Tea tree oil:
Tea tree oil is one of my favorite essential oils.
With powerful antiseptic and antibacterial properties, tea tree oil can cleanse your body from problematic bacteria.
Some have worried that because it’s so potent, it might be harmful. The good news is it isn’t, as demonstrated by the The Journal of Ethnopharmacology. In their study, they confirmed it as safe for use and as not posing a risk for harming users. **It should only ever be used externally as it is poisonous when taken internally.
One other note, it is potent enough that diluting it before use is recommended. Yes, There Are Many More Healing Essential Oils. What I’ve written on here is just a peek at what essential oils can do. More and more research is conducted on these oils all the time and I believe time will prove there’s a bright future for them.
